Teenage Girl Tied to a Tree and Tortured in Kurigram

A shocking incident has occurred in Ghorialdanga Union of
Rajarhat Upazila in Kurigram, where a 15-year-old girl was allegedly tied to a
tree and tortured for six hours. The incident took place on Tuesday morning
after the girl protested against false theft allegations made against her
father. The incident came to light when a video of the girl tied to the tree
went viral on social media.
The victim is a ninth-grade student at a local school. According
to local sources, the girl's younger sister (9) has been suffering from a heart
condition. To cover her medical expenses, the girl's grandmother gave her
father a cow. However, Abdul Kader, a distant relative and former Union Parishad
(UP) member, accused the girl's father of stealing the cow and threatened him.
When the girl protested against these false allegations, she was tied to a tree
in Abdul Kader's courtyard and tortured.
Details of the Torture
Local journalist Khondakar Arif reported that he visited the
scene at noon and found the girl tied to the tree with a rope. In a video
interview, the girl stated that Abdul Kader and several women tied her up at
around 9:00 AM. They wrapped a scarf around her neck to suffocate her and beat
her, injuring her knees, neck, and back. The girl also named the perpetrators
in the video.
Police Intervention
Police arrived at the scene at around 3:00 PM and rescued the
girl. Upon seeing the police, the accused fled the scene. Officer-in-Charge
(OC) of Rajarhat Police Station, Tashlim Uddin, stated that the girl was
rescued and brought to the police station. Based on her verbal complaint, a
woman named Maya Begum was taken into custody for questioning. Legal action
will be taken once the girl files a written complaint.

Local UP member Mamunur Rashid claimed that the girl's father
had forcibly taken the cow from her grandmother to cover his daughter's medical
expenses. When the grandmother tried to retrieve the cow, the girl pushed her
grandfather, causing him to fall. After the grandmother fell ill, local women
tied the girl to the tree. He added that the girl and another woman were taken
to the police station in his presence.
