Incident Details

In a shocking incident, Babul Hossain (50), a former Union Parishad (UP) member, was brutally beaten to death in broad daylight in front of his wife in Kulla Union, Dhamrai Upazila, Dhaka. The attack, allegedly stemming from a long-standing feud, occurred on Friday afternoon in the Makulia area of the Kulla Union.

Babul's wife, Yasmin, witnessed the horrific incident and identified several local individuals as the attackers. She recounted that her husband was attacked with sticks, hammers, and iron rods while he was working in a mustard field. Despite her attempts to intervene, the assailants overpowered her and left Babul critically injured. He was later declared dead at Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar.

Background of the Feud

According to locals, Babul had been involved in disputes related to land ownership and development projects in the area. He initially worked for the owners of the Akshirnagar Housing Project but later sided with local residents in their conflicts with the project developers. Recently, he had resumed working with the housing project's owners, which reportedly angered some locals.

Babul's family members revealed that his father, Idris Ali, was also found dead in a pond near the housing project in September of the previous year. The family suspects foul play in both incidents but has not received any justice so far.

Eyewitness Account

Yasmin, Babul's wife, described the attack: "They surrounded my husband and beat him mercilessly. They broke his arms and legs and gouged out his eyes. I recognized some of the attackers, including Apsan, Monir, Arshad, and his son. They are all from our neighborhood."

She added that Babul had tried to avoid conflicts and had stayed away from trouble since the previous disputes. However, his involvement with the housing project's owners had reignited tensions.

Hospital Statement

Dr. Ejaz of Enam Medical College Hospital stated that Babul was brought to the hospital at around 3:15 PM with severe injuries to his head and body. He was declared dead upon arrival.

Police Response

The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Dhamrai Police Station, Monirul Islam, confirmed that the murder was linked to a land dispute involving the housing project. He assured that the police are investigating the incident and will take legal action against those involved.

Family's Anguish

Babul's sister-in-law, Mukta, expressed the family's grief and confusion: "They killed Babul today, just like they killed his father before. We don't even understand why this is happening to us."

Community Reaction

The incident has sparked fear and anger among local residents, who are demanding justice for Babul and his family. Many have called for an end to the cycle of violence and feuds in the area.

Conclusion

The brutal murder of Babul Hossain highlights the dangers of unresolved land disputes and the vulnerability of individuals caught in such conflicts. The incident underscores the need for stronger law enforcement and conflict resolution mechanisms to prevent such tragedies in the future. The family and community await justice, hoping that the perpetrators will be brought to trial.
