Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) Director General (Additional IGP) AKM Shahidur Rahman has pledged that the force will no longer engage in disappearances or murders under any orders. He made this assertion during a media briefing at the RAB Media Center on Thursday afternoon.
In response to journalists’ questions, Rahman issued an apology to the families affected by RAB’s past actions, acknowledging instances of torture and other human rights violations. He emphasized that the force seeks redemption through transparent investigations and fair trials.
"The interim government was involved in disappearances and murders. The International Crimes Tribunal is conducting trials related to those incidents. I trust that all allegations against RAB will be thoroughly and impartially investigated, ensuring justice. This will allow the force to regain its integrity," Rahman stated.
He further explained that an investigative commission is examining all allegations against RAB, including cases involving secret detention sites, disappearances, and extrajudicial killings. Legal measures will be taken based on the investigation’s findings.
Rahman assured the public that strict disciplinary action would be enforced against any RAB personnel found guilty of overstepping their authority or committing crimes. He highlighted recent developments, noting that 16 RAB members had been arrested for criminal involvement since the interim government assumed office on August 5.
Criminal cases against these individuals include charges of robbery, extortion, kidnapping, and drug trafficking. Legal proceedings are currently underway.
Since RAB's formation, a total of 58 officers and 4,235 members have faced charges, leading to disciplinary actions. Rahman underscored that no member would be shielded from accountability.
He also revealed that 353 individuals, including four former ministers and 17 Members of Parliament (MPs), have been detained in connection with orders to open fire on students and civilians. Efforts are ongoing to arrest others implicated in these cases.
Expressing regret, Rahman reiterated his apology to all victims who suffered due to RAB's misconduct over the years. He assured the nation that the force is committed to upholding the rule of law and restoring public trust through accountability and transparency.
