57 Killed in Violent Clashes Across Bangladesh Amid Protests

DHAKA, Bangladesh — A wave of violence swept across Bangladesh on Sunday as clashes between protesters and Awami League supporters resulted in at least 57 deaths and numerous injuries. The unrest centered around the ongoing non-cooperation movement led by the Students Against Discrimination group.

In Sirajganj, a violent attack on the Enayetpur police station claimed the lives of 13 police officers. Attackers vandalized the station, set fires, and assaulted the officers, although their identities remain unknown.

In Narsingdi, violence erupted at the Madhabdi Bus Stand, resulting in the deaths of six individuals, including Awami League leaders and activists, and injuring four others. The deceased include Delwar Hossain (Chardigoldi union parishad chairman), Delwar (local Jubo League leader), Moniruzzaman Bhuiya (Sramik League leader), Anisur Rahman Sohel (Sramik League leader), and Nousher (ward commissioner). The identity of the sixth victim is yet to be confirmed.

In Bhola, three people were killed during clashes involving Chhatra League members and police. Over a hundred individuals, including officers, were injured in the violent encounters that lasted from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The BNP reported that two of its activists were shot dead, while the Awami League claimed a Jubo League member was beaten to death by protesters.

Joypurhat saw the death of Mehedi Hasan during similar clashes. In Barisal, the Karim Kuthir and Chaumatha areas became battlegrounds as students clashed with Chhatra League and Awami League members, resulting in the death of Tutul Chowdhury, a former Awami League leader. At least 20 others were injured.

In Sylhet, two individuals, Taj Uddin and Sunny Ahmed, were killed in clashes involving police and student protesters in Golapgong. Kishoreganj reported three deaths in confrontations between protesters and Awami League members.

Munshiganj witnessed the deaths of two people and injuries to 30 others in clashes between protesters and Awami League supporters. The identities of the deceased are not yet known.

Rangpur saw four Awami League members killed and over 100 injured during clashes. In Pabna, three students—Zahid Islam, Mahbubul Hossain, and Fahim—were shot dead, with 50 others injured in confrontations with Awami League activists.

Bogra reported four deaths, including Monirul Islam, during a day of protests. In Magura, a Chhatra Dal leader and another individual were killed in clashes.

In Comilla, a Jubo Dal activist was killed, and 15 others, including three children, were injured in a clash in Debidwar. Additionally, a police constable was beaten to death near the Eliotganj highway police outpost.

In Dhaka, Abdullah Siddiqui, a 23-year-old student from Habibullah Bahar Degree College, was shot dead during a clash in Jigatala, Dhanmondi. Another man was reportedly killed in Ashulia, Savar, amid clashes between protesters and Awami League supporters.

Violence also erupted at Mirpur 10, resulting in over 200 student injuries and one death, identified as Md Miraj Hossain. In Feni, five people were killed and over 30 injured during clashes between police, Awami League activists, and students at Mohipal.

The escalating violence underscores the deepening crisis and instability within the country as protests and confrontations continue.
